Period Property Restoration in Winchester

The Project

Dell Developments was commissioned to undertake the complete restoration and refurbishment of a distinguished period property in the heart of Winchester, Hampshire.

The client required a comprehensive approach to preserve the property’s historical elements while integrating modern comforts suitable for contemporary living. The brief called for the careful restoration of key architectural features, such as the original sash windows and period plasterwork, alongside significant upgrades to ensure the home provided both luxury and functionality.

The client also requested the redesign of the exterior grounds to enhance the outdoor space, ensuring it was both attractive and practical. Overall, the project aimed to harmonise historical preservation with modern living standards, elevating the property to meet high-end residential expectations.

The Challenge

The period property restoration in Winchester presented several challenges that Dell Developments needed to address. Maintaining the integrity of the original architectural features, such as the sash windows and intricate plaster coving, required a high level of craftsmanship to ensure these elements were preserved without compromising their historical value.

At the same time, modernising the property involved integrating contemporary amenities, like underfloor heating, without disrupting the period aesthetic. Additionally, significant structural modifications were necessary in areas like the basement to maximise space and functionality. The outdoor landscaping work also required careful planning to balance aesthetic appeal with practical use.

The Solution

Dell Developments delivered a meticulous restoration that balanced historical preservation with modern living. The original sash windows were skilfully refurbished to enhance energy efficiency while retaining their period charm. The intricate egg-and-dart plaster coving was carefully restored, preserving the home’s architectural heritage. Underfloor heating was discreetly installed throughout, providing modern comfort without compromising the aesthetic.

In the bathrooms, bespoke fixtures, caustic tiles, and premium stone finishes created luxurious spaces that blend classic design with contemporary functionality. Crittall steel windows were installed to increase natural light, and structural work in the basement maximised space. The outdoor grounds were redesigned with dressed lawns and a play area, adding functionality and beauty. The client was provided with a home that honours its history while offering modern luxuries.
